Are you interested in understanding the world beneath your feet? This session will give you practical, accessible techniques for learning about and testing soil health, whether you are a backyard gardener, a farmer, or a soil enthusiast. Contextualized by some fun and gritty soil science, we’ll walk you through how to take soil samples, read soil test reports, conduct your own water infiltration and slake tests, measure and understand soil horizons, and understand the beauty of the soil food web. All of this will be done in a hands-on, outdoor setting across some diverse locations on a partner farm. You’ll go home with some practical tools to become a citizen scientist and track your own soil health over time. Access to digital notes and methodologies included.
